Title: Muscles of the abdomen
Description: An image of a dissection of a man to show the muscles of the abdomen. The body is on its back on a table, with its legs overhanging the end and not shown. The outer tissues of the abdomen are peeled back to show the muscles underneath. A hook and the dissectors hand can be seen holding muscles aside so that others can be seen more clearly. A close up view of part of the dissection is also shown. The muscles of the abdomen and groin are individually labelled, also shown and labelled are the femoral artery and vein (M and N), the peritoneum covering the intestine (P), and the ribs (B). This illustration is used to show the muscles of the abdomen. The author explains that he chose to use this illustration from a public dissection because the subject was a sailor so the muscles were strong and clearly seen. The volume deals with the anatomy of the human body, its observation through dissection, and signs of disease. It includes detailed instructions of how to prepare and perform the dissections, a number of illustrations taken from dissections, and detailed descriptions of the parts of the body and their appearance.
